Hundreds of wild Asian elephants gather at the reservoir to drink, bathe, and play. This phenomenon, known as 'The Gathering', is an absolute highlight for any nature lover.

6. Get lost in the colonial streets of Galle Fort

On the south coast lies the atmospheric Galle, a fortified town built by the Dutch in the 17th century. It is the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon stroll and a stunning sunset on the old ramparts.

7. Admire the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy (Sri Dalada Maligawa)

This is one of the most sacred Buddhist shrines in the world, where the legendary tooth of Buddha is kept. Visit the temple during a 'puja' (prayer ceremony) and experience the mystical atmosphere, accompanied by traditional drummers and the scent of incense and lotus flowers.

8. See the sunrise from Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

For the adventurous traveller, the night-time climb to the summit of this sacred mountain (2,243 metres) is highly recommended. After conquering thousands of steps in the dark, alongside local pilgrims, you are rewarded at sunrise with a spectacular view. The shadow of the mountain forms a perfect triangle over the clouds in clear weather.
